Valentine’s Day is a day of romance. It is a day where gifts such as chocolates, flowers and/or jewelry are given to your “sweetheart” to express your love. Approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas. What makes this day so special is the exchange of gifts and love to one another.

One valentine card said, “Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite”. What a blessing to have that “someone special” in your life. Someone said, “Love is the most important word in the English language and also the most confusing”. It is hard to describe and define, but wonderful to experience. Our society is filled with songs, movies, books, poems, etc. that make love the desire and goal of one’s life. We enjoy stories of love. As we say this, most would think about a “Hallmark” movie or something similar. This is certainly true, but love can go much deeper than that. Think with me about the love of country or the love of a fellow soldier that would cause someone to give their life. Think with me about the love of a parent that would give their life protecting their child from harm.

The Bible tells us about the love we should have for one another. 1 Peter 1:22 says, “…see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:” 1 Thessalonians 4:9 adds “…ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.” We are also told about the love we should have for our family. The older women were instructed in Titus 2:4 to “teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,” Husbands are given instruction in Ephesians 5:25 which says, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”. This is certainly true, but love can go much deeper than that.

John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” This is how our Savior manifested His love for us. Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth (showed) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” One more verse that shows us the great love of God is John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Celebrate the gift of God, the gift of love, the gift of eternal life.
