The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time, (called “Summer Time” in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and we are happy to do so. We look forward to the days where we have light well into the evening. Someone said, “Light is Life.” Nothing is more important to us on earth physically than the sun. Without the sun’s heat and light, the earth would be a lifeless ball of ice-coated rock. The sun warms our seas, stirs our atmosphere, generates our weather patterns, and gives energy to the growing green plants that provide the food and oxygen for life on earth. Nothing is more important to us on earth spiritually than the SON, Jesus Christ.

The Bible is called a light because it is a guide and lamp to direct our steps in this life (Psalm 119:105). Christians are called lights because they reflect the light of the Son, just as the moon reflects the light of the sun. Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 4:6, “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”, and Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

This has been called a “dark” world. We are speaking of course about its spiritual condition. The Bible talks about the opposites of light and darkness, good and evil, right and wrong and righteousness and unrighteousness. Only one thing can dispel darkness and that is light. Jesus is the Light of the world. He is the only One that can dispel spiritual darkness. The problem is found in John 1:4-5 “In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

Ephesians 1:18, “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know…” The Gospel is called a light, the Bible is called a light, the Christian is called a light. These all point the world to the true Light which is Jesus Christ. In John chapter nine, there is a story about a blind man, blind from his birth. Religion did not restore this man’s sight. It was a miracle of God that he could now see. It is interesting that in the beginning of the chapter Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” I speak as one who was blind, knowing only religion, “Ask Jesus Christ to forgive you and be your Savior.” He will open your eyes.

May these truths bring new meaning to the words of the most famous hymn in the world, Amazing Grace.

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me; I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.”
John Newton
